Blood & Blood-Derived Biospecimen Glossary

Whole Blood Samples

Whole blood samples are blood specimens collected directly from a donor and preserved without separating their cellular and liquid components. Whole blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma, making it useful for hematology, molecular biology, biomarker, and diagnostic research applications.

Human Plasma Samples

Human plasma samples are obtained by collecting blood into anticoagulant-treated tubes and separating the liquid portion from blood cells through centrifugation. Plasma contains water, proteins, hormones, electrolytes, and clotting factors and is widely used in biomarker discovery, proteomics, pharmacokinetic studies, and clinical research.

Human Serum Samples

Human serum samples are produced by allowing blood to clot before separating the liquid component. Unlike plasma, serum does not contain clotting factors such as fibrinogen. Serum is commonly used in diagnostic testing, immunology research, biomarker analysis, and assay development.

PBMC Samples

Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) samples consist of immune cells isolated from whole blood, including lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, and NK cells) and monocytes. PBMCs are widely used in immunology, oncology, infectious disease, cell therapy, vaccine development, and functional immune response studies.

Buffy Coat Samples

Buffy coat samples are concentrated fractions of white blood cells and platelets that form between the plasma and red blood cell layers after blood centrifugation. Buffy coat specimens are frequently used for DNA extraction, genomic research, biomarker studies, and applications requiring enriched nucleated cell populations.

Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs)

Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) are a subset of blood cells characterized by a single round nucleus, including lymphocytes and monocytes. PBMCs play a central role in immune system research and are commonly isolated for cell-based assays, flow cytometry, immune monitoring, and therapeutic development.

Anticoagulant

An anticoagulant is a substance added to blood collection tubes to prevent clotting during sample collection and processing. Common anticoagulants include EDTA, heparin, and sodium citrate, each selected based on the intended downstream research application.

Fresh Blood Samples

Fresh blood samples are specimens processed and delivered shortly after collection to preserve cellular viability and biological integrity. These samples are often required for functional assays, cell isolation, flow cytometry, and other time-sensitive research applications.

Cryopreserved PBMCs

Cryopreserved PBMCs are isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells that have been frozen under controlled conditions for long-term storage. Cryopreservation allows researchers to maintain viable immune cell populations for future analysis while reducing variability across studies.

Prospective Blood Collection

Prospective blood collection is the customized collection of blood specimens from donors according to study-specific inclusion criteria, collection protocols, processing requirements, and clinical data needs. Prospective collections enable researchers to obtain specimens that meet precise project requirements when existing inventory is unavailable.

Biospecimen Annotation

Biospecimen annotation refers to the clinical, demographic, pathological, or laboratory information associated with a biological sample. Depending on study requirements and donor consent, blood biospecimens may be accompanied by anonymized clinical data that enhances research value and supports more meaningful analysis.

Disease-State Donors

Disease-state donors are individuals with a diagnosed medical condition whose biospecimens are collected to support disease-specific research. Blood samples from disease-state donors are commonly used in oncology, autoimmune, infectious disease, neurological, and rare disease studies.

Healthy Control Samples

Healthy control samples are biospecimens collected from individuals without the disease or condition under investigation. These samples provide an important baseline for comparison and help researchers distinguish disease-related biological changes from normal variation
